Navigating the Challenges of Space-A Travel: My Latest Adventure

Recapping another Space-A adventure, filled with unexpected twists, turns, and shenanigans. In my recent journey, the destination was Ramstein, but the path was far from straightforward. Here's a recount of my last Space-A escapade: So I’d left this blogpost in draft by mistake, late last year.* OOPS! (Written December 1, 2023)

The Initial Hurdles:

I spotted a flight to Ramstein departing from Andrews, sparking the beginning of my journey. Let the shenanigans begin!

  • Roll Call at Andrews: Making my way to Andrews, I marked myself present for roll call, there were just three of us selected for the journey.

  • Unexpected Pit Stop: Our plans took an unexpected turn at Dover, we took on some extra passengers but then encountered maintenance delays.

  • Unforeseen Maintenance Issue: This resulted in a five-hour wait ON THE PLANE before the announcement that we would be staying the night. Was NOT a happy camper with the lack of communication and the weird insistence we leave our checked bags to stay with the flight or grab our bags and get booted. I was tired and initially said you know what, just gimme my bag and I’ll sort it out in the morning, I was gonna head back to BWI but decided to stay and just grabbed some items from the checked bag.

Thanksgiving on Base:

Thankfully, the base lodging had room for us, and we were given a lift. To cut costs, the other single female traveler and I shared a room, spending Thanksgiving on base, enjoying a hearty meal at the Dining Facility. Public affairs were there with a camera in hand and I was like YIKES! Please don’t take any photos of me as I looked like something else Lol! But I did do my makeup and changed clothes so I didn’t look too bad.

  • Delightful Feast: Turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes – the works! The walk to/from lodging allowed me to burn off the calories.

  • Roll Call Drama: The following day brought more flight uncertainties, multiple delays, and a switch back to our original plane.

Arrival in Germany:

Finally departing on a Saturday morning, we landed in Germany that evening. However, a new challenge awaited – no rooms on base! The nearby Hotel Christine Landstuhl became my refuge, offering a cozy ambiance and welcome surprises, free breakfast:) The tiny size of the glasses and coffee assured me that we really do eat and too damn much in the USA. Yikes!

  • Unexpected Charm: The hotel's country-cozy décor, (though dated) mechanical blinds, and towel warmer became unexpected favorites.

  • Closed Sundays: Adjusting to the local rhythm, I discovered that businesses in Germany close on Sundays and Mondays. Not having the Cockpit lounge which was right in the lobby unavailable the two days I was there was a bummer. It meant I had to venture out by foot to a restaurant for grub, but it was all good. I was able to grab some tasty wings, fries, and a drink from New York Kabobs for slightly over 10 euros. Not bad!

  • Honorable mention: The super hot water, though I know isn’t good for the skin but it more than made up for the lack of a bathtub and was nothing that some body oil and cocoa butter lotion couldn’t fix. And they had WASH CLOTHS!

  • My travels in Spain and at some Airbnb’s alerted me to the fact that NOT all lodging provides washcloths and my bringing MY OWN for my face and body are prudent items to pack.

  • I seriously find that people not using washcloths shocking. You NEED that exfoliation! PeriodT!

Exploring Germany:

Despite the weathering conditions, I explored the town, appreciating its architecture. Unfortunately, many businesses were closed, leaving my desire for an authentic German café experience unfulfilled.

  • Frustration at the Terminal: No joy with the flight to Sigonella. But, sticking to plan C, I signed up for the next flight back to the US.

  • USO Highlights: The USO provided snacks and water, coffee, tea hot chocolate. Came through like a champ since the terminal's downstairs snack AND drink machines were out of order.

Return to the US:

Upon landing, the struggle continued with out-of-order Global Entry kiosks, no dedicated agent, and a long wait for bags. Despite the challenges, the overall cost of the Space-A journey, with two free checked bags, justified the ordeal.

  • Confirmation The Mythical Shuttle Exists:The mythical medevac shuttle from Landstuhl to Vincenza, Italy turned out to be real, thanks to a helpful fellow traveler sharing that he and his wife took that shuttle last week when they arrived.  They have a house in Verona, Italy and they split their time there throughout the year.

Lessons Learned:

As shown with this challenging adventure, Space-A travel requires patience, an adventurous spirit, and contingency plans. I'm already signed up for the next journey, embracing the uncertainties with a heart full of gratitude. Traveling this way is a COURTESY, not a privilege, nor a right.

Useful Resources for Space-A Travelers:

For those considering Space-A travel, here are some invaluable resources and key info:

  • Air Mobility Command Website: Essential for up-to-date information. Register Early: Depending on your category, early registration is crucial.

  • Passenger Terminal Page: Check the 72-hour schedule, 30-day schedule, and Roll Call Report.

  • AMC Grams: For each passenger terminal. Find useful telephone numbers and links.

  • Patience: Lots of it.

  • An Adventurous Heart: A must for embracing the unexpected.

  • Have a Plan: A, B, C, D, or E – flexibility is key.

  • Sufficient Travel Funds: Be prepared for commercial alternatives if needed.

Conclusion:

Space-A travel is not for the faint-hearted, but the experiences, camaraderie, and the people encountered along the way make it all worthwhile. As I continue to live the dream, I encourage fellow travelers to embrace the adventure, armed with patience and an open heart. Safe travels!
